Bokonbayevo, Kyrgyzstan: Independent Travel Guide

Issyk-Kul south shoreEagle huntingPersonally visitedUpdated Oct 2026

Bokonbayevo, also written Bokonbaevo, is a village on the southern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul in Kyrgyzstan. Unlike the more developed resort towns on the northern shore, it is a useful base for travellers interested in local culture, traditional guesthouses, eagle hunting and the quieter side of the lake.

The village is particularly known for the Kyrgyz tradition of eagle hunting, practised by specialists known as berkutchi. Travellers can arrange demonstrations with local eagle hunters, explore nearby villages, stay in guesthouses or traditional yurts and visit attractions such as Skazka Canyon.

I visited Bokonbayevo while travelling independently around Issyk-Kul. I stayed in a local guesthouse and attended an eagle hunting demonstration, an experience I photographed during my trip.

This guide explains how to organise a visit independently, including transport, accommodation, eagle hunting demonstrations, prices and practical tips. For the wider lake, see the Issyk-Kul Lake Travel Guide.

Why Visit Bokonbayevo?

Bokonbayevo is a good place to slow down and experience the southern shore of Issyk-Kul. Instead of large beach resorts, the area offers village guesthouses, opportunities to meet local families and access to cultural activities.

For many independent travellers, the main reason to visit is the possibility of seeing a traditional eagle hunting demonstration. However, Bokonbayevo can also be a comfortable stop while travelling around the lake, especially if you want to visit Skazka Canyon or spend time near the quieter southern shoreline.

It is particularly useful for backpackers who want to arrange activities locally instead of booking an expensive multi-day tour in advance.

How to Get to Bokonbayevo

From Bishkek

Bokonbayevo can be reached by road from Bishkek via the western end of Lake Issyk-Kul. Some services run along the southern shore, while other journeys may involve changing transport in Balykchy.

Following the bus station reorganisation in Bishkek, many Issyk-Kul services use Bishkek Bus Station at 1/1 Alma-Atinskaya Street. However, individual operators may use other boarding points.

Confirm the exact route, departure location and whether the vehicle travels via the northern or southern shore before buying a ticket. Do not confuse transport towards Cholpon-Ata or Karakol via the northern shore with services travelling directly through Bokonbayevo.

From Karakol

Marshrutkas and shared taxis connect Karakol with settlements along the southern shore of Issyk-Kul, and Bokonbayevo is one of the main destinations on this corridor. However, the exact boarding point and availability have changed over time.

Traveller reports have mentioned both the former southern bus station area and locations near the bazaar. Do not assume an older station pin or published timetable is still accurate. Ask at your accommodation in Karakol or confirm locally before departure, and allow extra time for road conditions and potential waiting.

From Cholpon-Ata or the Northern Shore

Travelling from the northern shore, including Cholpon-Ata, usually involves following the road around the western or eastern end of the lake. There is no road bridge directly across Issyk-Kul, so plan the connection according to your current location rather than assuming the opposite shore is a short journey away.

Getting Around Locally

Bokonbayevo itself is manageable for local exploration, depending on where you stay. However, guesthouses, yurt camps, beaches and activity locations may be spread out.

Confirm whether your chosen accommodation is in the village or nearer the lakeshore. Some activities require a local taxi or transport arranged through your guesthouse.

For marshrutkas, shared taxis and bus stations across the country, see the Kyrgyzstan Public Transport Guide.

How to See Eagle Hunting in Bokonbayevo

One of Bokonbayevo's best-known cultural traditions is eagle hunting. A trained golden eagle is handled by a berkutchi, a specialist who works closely with the bird.

For travellers visiting during the summer, the experience is usually an arranged demonstration rather than a traditional winter hunt. Demonstrations may include observing the eagle at close range and seeing the handler demonstrate aspects of the training.

The content of each demonstration varies. Do not assume that every demonstration includes a bird flying, hunting or interacting with live prey. Confirm the format beforehand. For cultural background, read our Eagle Hunting in Kyrgyzstan guide.

How to Arrange a Demonstration

  • • Ask your guesthouse or homestay.
  • • Contact the local Community Based Tourism office.
  • • Ask about existing groups that you could join.
  • • Confirm the demonstration location and transport.

Do not assume that a demonstration is available without advance arrangement.

Eagle Hunting Prices and Sharing Costs

Prices can vary depending on the organiser, group size, transport and what the experience includes. Some demonstrations are priced per group rather than per individual visitor.

Traveller-reported example · July 2026

In a July 2026 traveller report, a guesthouse-arranged demonstration was advertised at:

  • • 5,000 KGS for a group of up to four people
  • • 7,000 KGS for a larger group

Budget Tip: Split the Cost

If you are travelling alone or as a couple, ask your guesthouse whether other travellers want to attend a demonstration. Sharing a fixed group cost may be considerably cheaper than arranging a private visit.

You can also ask other backpackers staying in the village or enquire about existing group bookings. There is no guarantee that a group will be available on your dates.

Before booking, confirm:

Maximum number of participants
What is included
Demonstration duration
Transport to and from the location

My Experience: Eagle Hunting in Bokonbayevo

During my time on the southern shore of Issyk-Kul, I stayed at a guesthouse in Bokonbayevo and attended a local eagle hunting demonstration.

The hunter I met was known to me as Daniel, and I had the opportunity to photograph the experience and see the eagle at close range.

Bokonbayevo was an interesting stop in my journey because it offered a different experience from the mountain trekking and beaches elsewhere in Kyrgyzstan.

Responsible Eagle Hunting Demonstrations

Eagle hunting is a cultural tradition, but travellers should also consider the welfare of the birds involved. Before booking, ask what the demonstration includes and how the animals are treated.

Respect the eagle handler's instructions and avoid requesting unsafe interactions merely for photographs. If a demonstration involves live prey or an activity you are uncomfortable with, ask about this before making a booking.

A tourist demonstration is not the same as a real traditional hunt, and should not be described as one.

Things to Do Near Bokonbayevo

Relax by the Southern Shore of Issyk-Kul

The southern shore offers a quieter alternative to the busy resort towns further north. You can arrange time at the lakeshore, visit nearby beaches or stay in a yurt camp. Not every guesthouse in Bokonbayevo is directly beside the water, so confirm the distance to the lake before booking.

Visit Skazka Canyon

Skazka Canyon, also known as Fairy Tale Canyon, is one of the region's best-known natural attractions. Its eroded sandstone formations create colourful ridges, narrow passages and unusual rock shapes.

The canyon can be visited as a separate excursion while staying in Bokonbayevo. The turnoff is along the southern lakeshore road, but public transport does not normally take visitors directly to the canyon entrance. Arrange your return transport.

Visit Kyzyl-Tuu

Kyzyl-Tuu is known for traditional yurt craftsmanship. Visitors interested in Kyrgyz culture can enquire about demonstrations or workshops with local artisans. Arrange visits respectfully and confirm availability.

Stay in a Yurt Camp

The wider Bokonbayevo area has seasonal yurt accommodation, including camps closer to the lake and others towards the foothills. Facilities and meal arrangements vary. Ask about exact location, seasonal availability, bathrooms, meals and heating before booking.

Explore the Surrounding Landscapes

The southern shore has villages, open landscapes and mountain scenery. Some nearby outings can be organised through accommodation providers or the local CBT office.

Where to Stay

Village Guesthouses

Guesthouses are practical for independent backpackers. Staying in the village can make it easier to ask about transport, local activities and eagle hunting demonstrations.

Homestays

Family-run homestays can provide local accommodation and meals. Confirm whether meals are included in the advertised rate.

Yurt Camps

Some accommodation is located outside Bokonbayevo itself, closer to the lakeshore or in rural areas. Not all accommodation is within walking distance, so verify the exact position before arranging transport.

Camping

Camping may be possible at suitable managed or locally permitted locations, but not every beach or field is a legal campsite. I camped near the lake between Bokonbayevo and Skazka Canyon — that experience is described in the Issyk-Kul Lake Travel Guide.

Best Time to Visit Bokonbayevo

June to September is generally a convenient period for combining Bokonbayevo with travel around Lake Issyk-Kul. July and August are the busiest summer months.

Guesthouses and cultural activities may be available outside the peak season, but availability should be checked directly.

Traditional eagle hunting and staged demonstrations are not the same activity and do not necessarily share the same season. Confirm the type of experience being offered.

How Long to Stay

One Day

Arrive in Bokonbayevo, check into a guesthouse and attend a prearranged eagle hunting demonstration. Spend the remaining time exploring the village or relaxing.

Two Days

  • Day 1: Arrive, settle into your guesthouse and explore the local area.
  • Day 2: Attend a prearranged eagle hunting demonstration or visit Skazka Canyon and nearby south-shore attractions.

Activities can be rearranged depending on actual availability. Not every excursion can be reached on a fixed public transport schedule.

To fit Bokonbayevo into a longer route, see Start Planning Kyrgyzstan.

Prices

Confirm whether activity prices are per person or per group.

Check whether your guesthouse is in the village or nearer the lake.
