Kunming to Hanoi Overland
The most practical overland route from Kunming into northern Vietnam, using the Hekou North / Lao Cai border crossing.

If you want to avoid flying, this is the cleanest overland route from Kunming into Vietnam. The key move is taking the train down to Hekou North, reaching the border gate by car, crossing on foot into Lao Cai, and then choosing whether to continue straight to Hanoi or head up to Sa Pa first.
Best option
Take a high-speed train from Kunming South to Hekou North, continue by taxi or Didi to the border, cross on foot into Lao Cai, then travel onward to Hanoi by bus or train.

Step by step
Kunming South to Hekou North
Start with the high-speed train from Kunming South to Hekou North. This is the easiest and most reliable way to get close to the Vietnam border from Kunming.
Hekou North station to the border
From Hekou North station, take a short taxi or Didi ride to the border checkpoint. The station is not the border itself, so you still need this final transfer.
Cross from Hekou to Lao Cai on foot
Complete exit formalities on the China side, walk across the border crossing into Lao Cai, and go through Vietnam immigration on arrival.
Choose your onward route
From Lao Cai, either continue south to Hanoi by bus or train, or go straight up to Sa Pa by shuttle, bus, or taxi if you want a mountain stop first.
